The Alexandria Singers are seeking a Music Director who will be responsible for leading our chorus to continue to inspire and uplift the Alexandria community through the power of music. The Music Director must be someone who will lead with care, passion, and creativity— who sees the artistry in every note and values the people behind the music. As The Alexandria Singers Music Director, you will shape our musical vision, bringing fresh ideas and a collaborative spirit to our repertoire, performances, and outreach. You’ll be at the heart of our creative process, working with our collaborative musicians, chorus, soloists, and creative team to deliver inspiring performances. Key Responsibilities
Artistic Leadership
- Repertoire Selection: Curate diverse, engaging repertoire with input from the Creative Team (Creative Director and Collaborative Pianist) to suit the chorus's abilities and audience preferences as well as the goals outlined in the Singers' DEI statement. In addition, oversee feedback and recommendations from members and work collaboratively with the board on alignment of the program with the organization's goals and mission.
- Rehearsal and Performance Leadership: Assume responsibility for the preparation of the chorus to successfully perform at all scheduled concerts and extra gigs. Apply techniques to teach quality vocal production. Lead all performances, ensuring a polished presentation that reflects the chorus's mission and energy.
- Soloists, Specialty Acts, and Staff Selection: Approve or select soloists, specialty acts, collaborative musicians, instrumentalists, and technicians for all events and prepare them for their participation with our repertoire.
- Small Group Direction: Develop, rehearse, and conduct select smaller ensemble groups within the choir, as desired or deemed necessary in order to perform at private and public events, with the goal of increased community engagement and performance revenue. Plan and hold sectional rehearsals as needed to increase musical mastery throughout the full ensemble.
- Tour Planning: Attend performance tours as Music Director ensuring the same polished presentation that reflects the chorus's mission and energy at home, while abroad. All travel costs will be covered. Tours are typically out of the country every 2–3 years.
Collaborative Team Management
- Supervision: Provide guidance and oversight to the Creative Team, including the Collaborative Pianist and Creative Director, fostering collaboration and creativity.
- Membership: Participate in all new member auditions as principal adjudicator and collaborate with the Membership team on all new member selections as needed to keep the chorus at the appropriate size. Maintain open lines of communication to all Singers that allow for their overall enjoyment of their membership.
- Show Logistics: Collaborate with the Performance VP's and Show Manager's plans to execute performances, ensuring seamless logistics and high-quality productions.
- Venue Coordination: Review the Performance VP's selection of and recommendations for rehearsal and performance venues to ensure that they meet the chorus's needs.
Organizational Contributions
- Board Participation: Serve as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors, contributing insights on music programming and operations while adhering to the Board's policies.
- Budgeting: Partner with the Treasurer and budget committee on budgetary costs related to music acquisition, hiring of musicians and other creative staff for performances, and participate in the collaborative budgeting process.
- Fundraising: Support the Executive Director, VP of Development, VP of Marketing/Communications, Grants committee chair, and Board members involved in grants and other fundraising initiatives in their efforts to raise money by reviewing grant related activities, participating in video or email campaigns, and attending area events as needed.
Performance Objectives & Reviews
- Establish yearly objectives with the Board President, participate in mid-year and year-end performance reviews, and report progress and outcomes to the Board.
Community Engagement
- Develop relationships with other local arts and choral groups to promote The Alexandria Singers and explore collaborative opportunities, enriching the chorus’s reach and impact.
- Coordinate and implement all [choral/music] programming for which we are awarded grant funding, including but not limited to the current “Sing for Your Life” workshops ensuring all requirements, objectives, and outcomes are met. Work with the Board of Directors to develop and lead additional community-focused educational arts programs designed to align with our mission and engage a broader audience within the greater Alexandria area.

Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Music or Choral Direction preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience directing choruses; experience conducting a chorus with a focus on pops or contemporary music preferred.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Proven ability to lead diverse groups and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong understanding of repertoire selection for a pops chorus, balancing technical skill, member satisfaction, and audience engagement.
- Excellent conducting and rehearsal techniques, with the ability to inspire performers of varying skill levels.
- Passionate about creating a positive and inclusive chorus environment.
- Must be able to work in Alexandria, Virginia and surrounding locations.
